After-School Smiles

Kids are always on the go these days. After-school snack time can be a chance to share a moment together and give them energy for the day.

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2006:

  • 9 out of 10 adults and children of all ages have a snack every day.
  • Young children consume 1/3 of their total daily calories as snacks.
  • 30 percent of a child's snacking calories come from soft drinks, salty snacks and sweets.
  • Children under 6 get 35 percent and children 6 to 12 get 20 percent of their daily calcium intake from snacks.

Snack time is a wonderful opportunity to help kids get the recommended servings of nutrient-rich foods and may even prevent overeating later in the day.
